10 Ideas for Great Web Content
By Christina Nguyen, High Point Creative
- Create your Web site with your audience in mind—not internal
structures. Organize content so
they can easily find what they need.
- Write to your audience. As with any communications piece, you need to
write in a style and tone that meets your audience’s needs.
- Design for easy reading. Use a font size and color that can be seen.
Black text on white always works. White text on black can be hard on the
eyes. Be aware of how your copy and design are integrated.
- Include content (text, not just graphics) on the home page to help
search engines find you.
- Give visitors choices...but not too many. Break text up with quotes
as graphics. Have PDFs available for downloads, etc.
- Bite. Snack. Meal. Structure copy for quick reading that suits busy
visitors. Bite – your headline, the encapsulated information. Snack – a
short paragraph summary. Meal – the full article. Link to the snack and
the meal so your visitors can get more if they want more.
- Position yourself as a credible source. Support your information with
references to the proper source—even hyperlinks as long as you make sure
the links stay live.
- Be consistent in your messages, tone and style. Once your
Web site is
live, you can use its key messages in other places as
appropriate—presentations, print collateral, etc.
- Keep current. Adding new stories, something of value, will keep
visitors coming back.
- Be interactive. Try online surveys or message boards. Include forms
or links to e-mail addresses so visitors can give feedback.
